Hi all,
Last weekend saw the start of our sailing season at Dalgety Bay, with 25Knot breezes with heavy gusts thrown in for good measure.. great conditions for a Stratos...
After the nut on the end of the tiller remembered how to gybe.. a good time was had by all.. but the conditions reminded me what a pain the "either or.." arrangement for kicker and Cunningham can be..
Here's how it goes...
Hit the top mark.. dump the cunninham and let off some kicker... cleated on starboard side..
Scream off down to the leeward mark.. gybe.. approach on port... harden up... beat... on with the kicker... Oh.. it's too far away to reach.. lean in... crew is now vertical on the wire as a gust hits while you are a bit unbalanced! .. and repeat....
What I'd like to see is something to lead the kicker and cunningham out with the mainsheet on a swivel, so its always on the right side, and can be much more easily adjusted.
Does anyone else feel the current arrangement is a pain ??
Laser... would you like to work on a modification ?
Happy racing!
Dave

I agree It would be easier if the lines were spliced into two so you could adjust the control lines from either side. When the Stratos was designed it was not designed to be a racing boat even though it has that potential. However If the class wishes, it can make the change to the rules to allow the use of the extra blocks and rope needed. Laser can not change the design of the boat as it is a one design.
I hope this is of some help
Regards,

OK,
I'll work on this and let you all know how it goes.
We're the only Stratos racing at Dalgety Bay so.. no class problems ! |

If anyone has a solution could it be published as a simple line diagram on this site or at least a link or email address so we can aquire a picture. I'm hopeless at trying to visualise from a written description. I agree it would make much more sense if there was a line coming out of the console top in each direction. On the subject of controls are we allowed to change the spinnaker cleat for a spinlock type? This requires a positive downward movement to lock it thus preventing the sheet from jamming halfway down with the inevitable shambles which follows. |

I tried the spinlock option this weekend. Dead easy to change. The screw holes match the base of the spinlock.. Much easier to use, no jams,
I would recommend one! I think you can buy them online form spinlock for about 22 quid.
Still working on the kicker controls.. I need to put a pair of double cheek blocks under the centre console, where the single ones currently are. This could be a pain!
Cheers all |
