Out on Sunday (a little gusty to say the least)- the crew spent considerable time trying to keep the centreboard down with one foot, whilst trying to hike out and sheet the jib!! Have tried tightening the "friction" device several times but still get those pop-ups when least expected. Sending for a replacement "device" but wondered if anyone else had any clever ideas here - save us continually monitoring the centreboard.

I have seen a number of different methods for restraining the centreboard. I sue a bungee cord and attach one hooh to the central hoop and the other to the rope loop at the back of the centreboard. Works ok for me and has the advantage that if you hit the bottom the bungee cord has enough give to prevent damage.

we use a bit of shock-cord with a hook. The cord is tied onto the toe strap ropes on either side and the hook goes onto the rope handle of the centreboard. Very simple.. never pos up

I've recently bought a Stratos after 2 years sailing a 2000. Identical problem. The 2000 website has covered this item many times and the general consensus is to use bungee as mentioned by other respondents. The limiting factor with this is that should you want to raise the board just a little, or half, whilst racing it's not possible.

The only real 'fix' is to remove the board, remove the friction device, piolt drill the holes a little deeper and refit. This allows the screws to go in deeper and squash the tube more thereby increasing the friction. Also, different diameter and strengths of tube can be used but it depends what you can get hold of.

I'm still at the bungee stage as I don't raise the board, but as I keep going over on Gybes, I'm going to need to start!!!!

Last comment, even if you do make the friction device work effectively, I would still use some sort of bungee. It's a real drag trying to right ant boat, let alone a Strat with a centreboard that's dissappeared back into it's slot!

Good Luck

Martin

Thanks to all for the ideas. I think you've all just about aligned with my thoughts. Sounds like the bungee option is simple but perhaps limited for half way measures (i'll watch my jybes), but at least the board's down to save poking it back through the slot after a capsize. And refitting the friction device may help too. Cheers
Pat (and soon to be less frustrated and acrobatic crew)
