how to people in general attatch the bow to the trailer? If I simply clip the winch strop onto the towing eye at the bow, the trolley bounces on the trailer causing a hell of a racket.
The winch is set too high and does not pull down at all on the bow. Do others lash it, loop the winch strop round the bar at the base of the forestay, or pass the winch strop round under the main traler arm to pull the bow down as well as forward?
Its a simple trick which the Laser people usually show you. You wind up the winch until the trolley eye is located over the trailer post and fit the clevis pin. once secure you loosen the winch strop and unhook it. Next you pass the strop under the 2 diagonal braces between the winch post and the trailer chassis, bringing it back up onto the stainless steel bow loop. when hooked on again simply wind up the tension on the winch and the bow and trailer is pulled firmly forward in the rubber Vee block and also down onto the trailer base. Quicker done than explained! N.B make sure all the spinny pole gubbins is pushed well in or it gets in the way and the strop can strain against the pole.
This was how the guy I bought the boat from delivered it. I just didn't like the look of the strop passing through these braces and any chaffe that might occur. I was thinking of bolting on a keel roller which is wide enough to take the strop flat, and passing it through that (maybe something like http://www.seamarknunn.co.uk/catalog/items/item758.htm ).
Hi sorry for the long pause. Just returned from the Topper Nats with No.1 son. Yes you are right we get some chafe from this method. Your idea sounds really cool. The main thing is to get a force acting forward and down to stop the front end and trolley crashing up and down on the retaining post. ( its a very annoying noise for everyone) If you do it post a photo so we can all see the mod. Cheers Mark
