Hello All, I see that there has been a quiet patch to the board so I though I would let those interested know that I had my PY handicap cut to 1000. This was done during a regatta as in light airs we were sailing well against RS400's. During one stong wind race we apparently sailed to 950 !! So much for a slow boat. I am interested to hear from others regarding any adjustment - I do feel that the boat sails faster than 1095 - and I have been consistently been head to head with a Phantom sailing off 1050. Has anyone any experiences worth noting ? Regards DShannon

I raced against Wayfarers and they were most upset when I won. Sailed much higher, and this in a Keel! |

My club moved me to 1085 (centreboard). It is difficult to draw comparisons properly as I sail with my kids (11 and 13) whereas the RS400s and Iso are all experienced adults. However the Stratos is very sensitive to crew weight and we easily sail to this handicap in lighter airs (and are also able to sail lower downwind which s crucial) but get stuffed in F4 upwards. I sometimes also sail against phantoms but these are new boats, flashy rigs and sailed by top of the fleet guys. They always beat me which is probably right (if I put my ego to one side!). Phantoms require v large helmsmen and are slow without. My view is that 1085 is about right. |

We have been beating boats like the wayfarer regularly as well as Laser radials (PY of 1078)and 420's (centerboard). It prompted me to write to the RYA and they replied suggesting that there are not enough returns yet but on current numbers a PY of 1082 is what they would consider reasonable. My club have been suggesting I use 1070. hope this is of some help. |

I'm sialing mine off 1075 for the current series. I used 1080 all season and we did well, but the thing about handicaps is that it's all relative. Ever tried racing against keelboats in a dinghy? The numbers suggest that, for example a GK24 sailing off 1037 would hammer a Stratos sailing off 1080, but even in light airs, the stratos will hammer the GK round the cans.. If I sailed my stratos against an all asymmetric fleet consisting of Int.14's L4000's RS400's etc, I would need a number like 1100 to compete on a level playing field, yet in a handicap fleet, sailing against Lasers, Fireballs GP14's etc 1075 or 1080 are pretty competitive.. And all that depends on how good you are and how good the competition is.. the better they are the higher the number you need.
So what are you all sailing against.. are you using straight RYA numbers or operating a rolling handicap system... ?????????
