Does anybody else hate their Stratos cover, heavy, attracts slime and other 'green stuff'. Has anyone sourced one from alternative suppliers which is more user friendly? (cheaper than Lasers normal extortionate prices). Just priced a new genneker sock .........£99...it must be nice to have a monopoly ! I think its time for some old sailcloth and a sewing machine !

Me too.
When I took delivery of my new Stratos in October 2005 the cover fitted so badly that I returned it. It was far too tight over the transom corners. The replacement was only a little better, but is still really 5 cm too short, so that if it fits at the back, it does not fit over the bow.
Also I have finally fitted a cord from the D-ring on the cover around the mast to tie around the boom, to lift the cover so less water collects in the centre of the cover (less water: less slime).

yep just done the genny sock, not much for 99 quid,
i suspend the cover from the centre stainless handle D and from the mast collar D with 2 elastic bungee, most of the water flows off

Just priced a spinnaker sock for my ISO (very similar) ....£67. Nice to know we are keeping Laser in profit !
Still scrubbing my cover, thnaks for the suggestions for keeping it dry

I decided to order a new cover this year too, as my boat is April 2003 vintage (I've only had it a year) and the original Laser cover, though it still fits quite well, is showing signs of ageing -- the straps are getting very stiff and black (they look as if they might have been yellow, originally), and the cord round the mast cuff perished last year.
I've ordered my new cover through Piplers of Poole because I happened to have been given vouchers to spend there. They assured me of the quaity, and source it from a local supplier, so I'll have to report back how I find the cover when it gets delivered in a couple of weeks time. Their price was £170 inc VAT plus carriage.
I think my old cover would collect water, but I raise the front of the trailer on a wooden trestle and this has kept the cover drained over last winter.

I have just ordered a new stratos keel but not the laser cover after the reviews on this site. I have chatted to the local sail makers up here in Aberdeen, who will for a little more money make me a over the boom cover from a very high quality breathable fabric. This is used by most oil companies up here, also used by lots of boat owners up here.
I will get back with a full report and perhaps a picture or two. |

Well I've fitted my new cover, made by rainandsun.co.uk (tel 023 8055 5448). and it is a fairly good fit (slightly tight between mast and bow, but no worse than the original Laser cover). The material is a lighter weight, but still quite substantial. The same number of openings and slots and straps as the original Laser version, but quick-release snap clips are fitted throughout. I've put a couple of pics in the files section of the forum under my username.
I ordered the cover from Piplers of Poole, and it was £175 inc VAT plus carriage (about £8).

Recently became proud owner of No. 852 centreboard. Original laser cover was looking knackered so I ordered a new one from a S coast sailmaker I have used before. I asked for a 'T cosy' for the mainsheet hoop to avoid the hole in the middle. Said sailmaker kindly visited a stratos at a local club to measure this up, as it isn't a standard feature.
Now have the same fit problem at the front of the boat decribed by others, the cover will not close at all at the bow. Mast is rigged according to the laser manual. Apart from that, this is a great cover, soft thick pvc and straps and clips everwhere.
Having looked at 10 other Stratos's in the club compound, with a variety of covers, none of which fit very well, I conclude that the Laser template is wrong and needs to be longer by about 4" in the middle, between the hoop and the shrouds. Beware anyone ordering a new one, espcially the standard Laser one.
I'm returning mine for this modification, which I am sure will not be a problem for this helpful sailmaker. In the meantime, gone sailing! |
