Has anyone used their Stratos for cruising or longer distance events especially off-shore? I am wondering whether anyone has any innovative ideas for where to stow everything, especially the extra safety and nav kit that is required. Also, how well the boat (we have a Keel) performs when the sea and winds are proving uncooperative or over-enthusiastic!! There are a few journeys we would like to have a crack at like round Anglesey and the Caledonian Canal.

I never tried it, some longer races at sea though. Downwind is a hoot - surfing off the waves but upwind involved a certain slapping due to the flat undersections in seas. I have a centre-board and I don't think I would venture too far (1-2miles)from a bolt hole in case of an emergency. I stow things in the roll-top waterproof bags and clip them to the mainsheet hoop. I guess there are a lot of factors to consider. Caledonian Canal sounds good - think they would let you do the Great Glen Raid? |

I sail a keel in the Solent. Not a problem. Very stable even in gusty F.5. I keep gear in a bag alongside the pole, and could get more there if I didn't mind fouling the pole. Paddles are under bag by the pole. Anchor goes on the deck in strong plastic bag behind the ropes storage bag, where I keep spare fuel for the outboard.
have fun.

Hi Jim,
I have a Stratos Keel too based inland and I'm considering getting her down to the coast some weekends. That would be in Chichester Harbour, Hamble River, the Solent (probably near Lymington) or Poole Harbour.
However I have no outboard at the moment. Is it an absolute security requirement to sail in these areas, or could I do without it?
Regards, Pascal |

Tides have to looked at carefully in the Solent - make life easy, sail out with the tide and return back with the tide !
The tide can be strong in places eg. Hurst, to west of Keyhaven. If the wind drops you will drift. In these conditions yachts often drop anchor and wait for the tide to turn.
Having said this, the Solent area is safe because land and safe havens are never far away, and lots of help is available because of the large number of boats around you.
