Hi there, Just wondering if anyone else is having issues with the mainsheet. There is a lot of friction and so it doesn't run very well. This is obviously a problem when a big gust is just about to hit or in light winds. I have spoken to the local Laser dealer and they have advised me that there is two different ways to thread the mainsheet. (to go to either the forward or aft block on the big metal frame first) After having tried both there is still no real improvement. It seems that most of the friction is created at the ratchet block. One idea is that the mainsheet is too thick...??? Either way the system doesn't work well (especially compared to the rest of the boat which is very good). Does this happen to anyone else?? Any good ideas?
Richard, I have never had any problems with my mainsheet from new and with the original sheets. Except of course when I thread it incorrectly, that does make a difference. Have a look at www.beveridges.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Rigging.htm Somewhere on that page is a picture of my mainsheet.
I changed mine last year, it was forever dragging through the blocks and bearing away was difficult. I changed to the same diameter 'marlow braid'. There are some thinner spectra and kevlar ropes but I felt that there might then be block issues - plus of course the cost!
