I've recently purchased a used Laser Stratos Keel and I was surprised to see that the mainsail has the foam insert normally found on centreboard versions. Maybe it isn't the original sail. I'm considering removing it because it makes folding the sail tricky and I would like to know if anybody has undertaken such an operation already.
It doesn't look very difficult: just undoing the stitches and removing the sailcloth triangles from either sides of the sail. However I'm wondering if doing so could damage the sail in any way or alter its performance.
Hi Pascal, I have a centre-board version, & I think a few of us have wondered if it really does much good !! Looks pretty crap. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I roll the sail up as this is also better for it - less creases.
I would imagine you could remove it, but would you not be left with a baggy pocket ?? Sorry I can't help more than that, but if I were to do it, then I would chat to a sailmaker as I would want it smooth after and that may mean restitching the luff and leach. Cheers - Dave
Pascal, May I suggest that before any changes are made to the sail that you check to ensure that this does not go against the class association rules. Keith
