Dear All,

I have just had an email from Pete Robbins, who is concerned about a possible leak in his Laser Stratos after reading we had one which was noticed during the Rutland weekend. I am aware that other boats may have had a similar problem and ours has now gone back to Laser to be fixed. I was wondering whether this is a problem that needs properly investigating as it does not seem to be isolated. The leak shows itself by the collection of water in the central section of the boat between the outer hull and cock pit floor. This section is accessed through the hatch in the centre of the stern of the boat and would show itself by a gallon or so of water draining out of the bung hole in the middle of the transom. This occured to us after an hour or so sailing in flat calm on Rutland Water in bright sunshine. The boat was new and had not been sailed before although it had been trailed from Swansea to Rutland. My understanding is that very little water should gather in this section at all, as the boat is "self-draining".

Any opinions/comments/help would be gratefully received.

Mark

Pete

Last year I was on a course at Calshot who have 4 or so heavily used Stratos, probably very early ones. They were pretty reluctant to leave them moored on bouys over lunch as their experience was that the shipped a lot of water.

Mark,

I bought a Stratos CB from Laser (4 mths old ish) that had had a similar leak and was then repaired. No problems since (as in bone dry). It sounds like there is a quality control issue with the manufacturing process. Hope this helps restore some confidence. Paul at laser may wish to comment as this would seem to be a bit of an issue with the Stratos.

Dave.

Mark,

I have recently purchased a 1-year old Keel and just this weekend spotted exactly the situation described by you. My boat (SN 600) is in excellent condition and I had it on a mooring from Saturday morning to Monday evening last. In between I did a few short sailing stints but nothing strenuous. When I hauled out at the end of the weekend I noticed that there was a gallon or so of water sloshing around between the inner and outer hull, which was surprising to me. I hadn't noticed it as much the week before when I hauled the boat out after just 24 hours on the mooring. I definitely will be keeping an eye on it though lest there is an actual problem. Is there a general area that causes a problem such as the slot surrounding the centreboard/keel? I'll be double-checking the gaskets on the examination hatches next time I launch, just in case that might be a problem. Sending the boat back to Laser would be a bit of a pain for me as I'm on the west, west coast of Ireland (next stop Boston, Ma.!)

Hi everyone, We have had a couple of issues with some Stratos leaking This should now be resolved as we are A)Changing our supplier and B)Pressure testing all the boats before they leave the Laser Centre. The problem was that some of the fittings had not be sealed properly caused by human error, hence causing a handful of leaks however every boat that we have been informed about we have fixed so if anyone else has slipped through the net please give myself or Rob Gutteridge a call on 01327 841604 or 01327 841608
As far as calshots boats go, as Pete mentioned they are old and heavily used and not treated with the same respect that you or I would traet our own boats.
I hope this as cleared up some issue's
Regards,

Mark,
Had excactly the same problem with my boat purchased last year. Water was penetrating either through the rear bung or rudder housing. Laser sent out a chap who removed the offending items, rebedded them on silicone - problem gone. I used to have gallons of water only after 10 mins sailing.

Anyway problem completely solved now.

Good luck

Regards

Ewan
