I am thinking of buying a Honda 2.3 hp outboard. Has anyone tried this engine on a Stratos and should I buy the long or the short shaft version (transom heights 571 and 418 respectively)?

I'm also interested in getting an outboard for getting home against the tide when the wind fails but know nothing about them.

So what is a decent spec? 2, 3 or 4hp? 2 stroke or 4 Stroke? Long shaft or short shaft? Capsize proof??

I've got a 3.3 hp Mercury 2 stroke on a standard shaft that does the job well and has proved reliable.Only has forward gear but whole engine is reversable for going astern.

I have a Honda 2hp, the predecessor of the 2.3. It is reliable and has enough power for the inland loch that I sail on. It uses unleaded petrol, which is easy as no mxing is required. You have to be careful how you store and transport the engine. I have a short shaft engine which seems to work fine. I am not sure that it is capsize proof!

I went through the same deabte last year and there other threads on the web site discussing engines.

A Mercury 3.3hp longshaft came with my boat. Very reliable, starts first touch and plenty of power (Stratos Keel out in breezy open harbour) - but the shaft is too long. The prop drags in the water even when the engine is raised to the full extent and I'm on port tack! I'm looking to swap for a short shaft!

I have a Honda 2.3 HP 4 stroke engine, short shaft. I've only tried it once - last w/e at Studland. Quite impressed. I did suffer from plug oiling early on, probably due to some oil leakage due to travelling/incorrect stowage/first run of the season (4 strokes have to be stood upright or layed on one side) Plug oiling solved by removing plug and wiping - lesson is take the tool kit afloat with you. Hope this helps, Dave.

Just realised that "Mercury" should read "Mariner"!

I've bought a Honda 2.3 short shaft at the boat show in January but I haven't had the occasion to try it on the water yet. I've mounted it once on the boad however and the shaft lenght looked about right.

I'll be taking my Stratos to Britanny this summer (Golfe du Morbihan) where ebb currents are very strong, so that will be a good test for the Honda...

Pascal, where abouts in Morbihan? That was our plan for this year but circumstances have put paid to that.

We have friends who live in Port Navalo. Beautiful area. I'd be interested in hearing how you get on, where you keep the boat and launch from.

Hi Pete,

I will be near Auray, and I haven't figured out where to launch yet. I will be staying with friends who have a family house with a mooring (on the Crach river I think), so that will be an option.

I'll make a note of launch sites around the Golfe.

Chrs,
Pascal

We have a 4hp Tohatsu 2 stroke. This was the smallest motor with a proper reverse gear selector. I generally use it fixed with the rudder used to steer as this damps out the jerky steering movement you get with outboards. I wanted an engine that would cope with 4-5 knots of tide which is common in the west country estuaries. The reverse makes for much more seamanlike manoeuvring alongside. The Tohatsu company makes the small engines for Mercury and Evinrude so parts are easy. It was the cheapest 4hp deal I could get at £420.00 last autumn. Laser say this is the largest size suitable for Stratos.
