I broke my rudder blade a couple of weeks ago running aground in unexpectedly shallow water in Chichester Harbour. Naturally the rudder jammed down and ripped the downhaul rope out. Yes I wish I had used an autorelease clam cleat for the rudder downhaul; I have ordered one now.

Noble Marine insurance gave a fantastic response: I emailed photos of the damage on a Thursday evening, and had a reply confirming they would replace the rudder blade by 9.08 am the following morning.

However at the moment, there are no Stratos rudder blades available from Laser Direct or through my local laser stockist. They are completely out of stock until the next stock comes in, hopefully at the end of May. No Bank Holiday Stratos sailing for me.

For everybody's information the part number for the rudder blade is NOT 4711 but 77211. The Laser parts diagram is incorrect. When I have time I intend to annotate the Laser parts diagram to correct the error. Apparently its a copy/paste type error in their drawings.

Our rudder damage was also due to the downhaul being ripped out, but took a piece of the rudder blade with it and caused a full thickness crack from the downhaul hole to the edge, hence unrepairable.

Glad to say I was able to collect a new rudder blade last week. I would recommend Sailboat spares, Emsworth, www.sailboatspares.com, for prompt and efficient communication and excellent service. They also fitted the autorelease clam cleat for the downhaul for me.

Yep! I did exactly the same last week! Easy to repair though as cosmetically the repair doesn't show behind the stock.

If you are talking about the old style rudder blade, part no. 4711, they seem to be back in stock at Laser as we had a new one arrive on Tuesday after ordering it on Thursday last week.

Our rudder broke after the downhaul was ripped out of the blade - is this a common occurrence?

Thanks for recommendation of Sailboatspares, but I have already tried them. I only live a few miles away from them.

Sailboatspares were my nominated repairer/stockist for my Noble Marine insurance claim. They have been really helpful with quick communication but they don't have any rudder blades in stock either.

Interestingly sailboatspares lists a rudder blade for Stratos/Bahia, and a different blade for Laser 4000, Laser 2000, Vago and a third foil for Laser 5000.
Anyway if Stratos shares a rudder blade with Bahia,no general problem with production in the medium future. The man at LaserDirect said all their Stratos rudder stock had been taken with a big foreign order.

Not sure if you have tried this website, I think they are on the South Coast

http://www.sailboatspares.com/index.asp?selection=boats&InBox=STRATOS&subcat=FOILS

let us know hw you get on.....otherwise (Northampton) Sailboats have taken over spares for most of the discontinued Laser fleet and I am pretty sure the 4000 rudder is the same ? and my 5000 rudder looks pretty similar...Laser should be able to advise

Good luck
