Posted - 12 Sep 2008 : 21:00:55 being a newbie I'm making the mistake of chaffing my boom on the shrouds. I can see bright aluminium rub marks to 2 places on the boom. Also sailing down wind I can see the mailsail chaffing on the spreaders. I can see plastic sail wheels are available that clip on to the shrouds. Can you get the to clip onto the spreader ends? I guess there are a few to many occasions when I panic and let the mainsail out to much. |

Posted - 13 Sep 2008 : 21:33:41 Thanks for the top tip on how to fix the Holt sailwheels, I'll be up to force4 chanderly soon. Got out on the boat last saturday with two guys at our club. I'm still laughing, because one of us fell overboard whilst changing postions on the tiller. I thought am goin be able to turn this around, then a hand appeared on the transom and up popped a very wet collegue. Yes I'll have to get along the coast to see how a boat should be rigged. Nice weather to day but no wind here. |

Posted - 13 Sep 2008 : 18:34:39 Hi Neil
Yes the sail wheels are great - I have them on mine. Clip them on just above the spreaders and put some insulating tape and a tiny cable-tie just above, so that they are free to rotate, but not slide up.
Hope you've got rid of that 'orrible mainsheet. !! I tie the end of mine round the toe-straps, which helps avoid tangles. Also, you can just tie a figure-of-eight, in just the right position, so that when you dump all the mainsheet, the knot stops boom 10-20 mm off the shrouds.
Fancy coming up to warsash for a sail in mine? Let me know when you're free.

Posted - 13 Sep 2008 : 15:16:04 Thanks for the advice. I guess I spend to much time hanging around with the main up but out against the spreader on and around the launching ramp to lose the wind. Do better sailers not have the main out so far when sailing so as to avoid hitting the speaders? |

Posted - 12 Sep 2008 : 22:48:53 Hi, First, tie the end of the main sheet around one of the aft hiking straps with a bow line. This will shorten the sheet by about one metre and prevents it from getting tangeled up.Now whith the boat still on the trailer take the boom out as far as the sheet will go and shorten if it still hit the shrouds. Second, hoist the mainsail and mark where the mainsail hit the spreaders. Cut 4 circular patches of self adhesive dacron of about 15 cm in diameter and attache them to the mainsail at the marks when the sail is fully hoisted and when it is reefed. Hope this will help.
